Inspired by a beautiful land and it’s special traditions

Colourful kokeshi dolls with white faces on a white background - repeat pattern

We lived in Japan for over 6 years and they were possible the best 6 years I can remember. The country and it’s people were more inspiring and amazing than I had imaged possible. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I hope that one day we will go back there.

When I was in design school I was told that all designs originate in Japan. At the time that made no sense to me but after living there I can understand it. It is so much fun there and there are designs and gadgets for things you honestly wouldn’t think you needed (and lets face it normally don’t but where is the fun in that).

Tiny Navy Blue Kokeshi dolls on rows on a white background - repeat pattern

There are many different designs and models of Kokeshi dolls, some very old and simple and other more modern, some elaborate etc. They really are a wonderful thing to collect and make great souvenirs from Japan. Many people who collect the small statues look for unique ones at the weekend flea markets. It is a lot of fun. There is a great market at Yasukuni Shrine every weekend worth checking out.

cross hatch coordinate pattern to go with colourful Kokeshi dolls - repeat pattern

I made the design above (obviously not a kokeshi doll) to compliment the other designs. The crosshatch was taken from one of the patterns on a kokeshi doll in the colourful patterns. The coral colour also comes from the same pattern. I liked this one a lot when printed onto fabric.
